Are You Adding Acid the Wrong Way?

We’re talking about how to properly and safely pour muriatic acid into your pool. This is one of the most important and potentially dangerous steps in pool care, so read carefully and never hesitate to ask questions if you’re unsure. Safety always comes first.

Step 1: Safety First
Before you even open the acid bottle, make sure you’re protected. Read the manufacturer’s safety guidelines thoroughly. You’ll need a 5-gallon plastic bucket, acid-proof gloves, eye protection, and a respirator or mask. Acid is highly corrosive—be aware of the splash zone and keep pets and kids far away during this process.

Step 2: Proper Dilution is Key
Never pour muriatic acid straight into your pool. First, fill your 5-gallon bucket about halfway with water. Then, slowly and carefully add 4 oz. of muriatic acid to the water. Important: Always add acid to water—never water to acid. This helps prevent a dangerous chemical reaction.

Step 3: Turn On Your Pool Equipment
Make sure your pool pump is running to ensure good circulation. The goal is to evenly distribute the acid through the pool water as quickly and safely as possible.

Step 4: Pour Gradually Around the Pool
Take your time and slowly pour the diluted acid mixture into the pool as you walk around the edge. Focus on areas near the return jets for better distribution. Avoid “column pouring”—pouring in one spot—because it can lead to surface staining over time.

Step 5: Know Why You’re Using Acid
Muriatic acid is used to lower high pH levels. Don’t add acid if your pH is already low—it’ll only make the water cloudy. Saltwater pools and pools treated with Cal-Hypo shock tend to need more acid over time, so check your chemistry regularly. When in doubt, test first and ask questions.
